modernfamilytrim1.jpgDo you have a New Year's Resolution? Around this time, most people make resolutions to lose weight or go to the gym more, or at least to shave off some "holiday pounds." Sometimes we wish TV shows would make similar resolutions. If they would only trim a little fat, or cut out certain aspects all-together! Here are some shows we wish would trim up a bit.

Dexter: trim the LaGuerta/Batista romance subplot.
laguerta-batista-showtime-1285351822.jpgAt the end of Season 5 they were like, "let's start over," and we were like, "Noooo! Let it die!" Because there was nothing less interesting than their marital problems when killers and vigilantes were on the loose. Make it stop, or at least don't let it take up half of an episode.

American Idol 2011 judges

We’ve got another round of early spoilers for the upcoming season of American Idol. Joe’s Place has pulled back the curtain on a new round of singing where the Top 40 will face off with some new choices:

The top 40 will be brought back to Hollywood for a round called “Sing For Your Life”. What is unknown at this time is if this round will actually cut the top 40 down to a top 12, or 15, or 20.

What is known is that during this round contestants choose ONE song to sing. They can choose from the AI approved song list, pick another song, not on the list and hope that it gets approval, or they can sing AN ORIGINAL SONG.

The contestants can choose to sing it Acapella or with ONE Instrument.

Letting the American Idol hopefuls perform an original song is a much needed enhancement to the show. Of course we’ve got the return of musical instruments, but I don’t think anyone really thought that’d be going away.

I can’t wait to see how this new round plays out. What about you?

American Idol judges 2011

Fox spent their holiday week sending out preview copies of American Idol (where’s the love, Fox?) and while I didn’t get to watch it myself the early reviews have been very positive, especially for Aerosmith front man, Steven Tyler.

Orlando Sentinel’s Boedeker had this to say about Tyler:

Over the weekend, I saw 23 minutes of this season’s “Idol” auditions, courtesy of Fox. Tyler emerges as the star on a panel that works efficiently. A three-judge setup is far better than a four-member panel. Randy Jackson is more businesslike than ever, and Jennifer Lopez is charming.

But Tyler jolts the show. He makes faces, sings along with the hopefuls, mouths the words, provides percussion by banging on the desk, even howls. You keep watching to see what he’ll do next. He also makes concise judgments.

Growing up as an Aerosmith fan has me predisposed to like Tyler while my all-around distaste for Diva JLo means she’ll have to work a lot harder to win me over. Randy? He’ll just have to limit his “dawgs” and “bombs” to keep me happy.

Which American Idol 2011 judge are you most anxious to see sharing his or her musical advice this January?

Go ahead, admit it, the best thing about the return of American Idol is the return of the worst singers you’ve ever heard. Fox introduces us to some of the musical terrors ahead of Idol’s 2011 premiere on January 19th with their latest promo.

The video is below the fold, thanks to its autoplay settings:

Oh so horrible, but would you expect anything less? Lots hope they’ve got some equally awesome singers though to offset these disasters!

ai-preview.JPGOh, Steven Tyler. You had me at, "Well hellfire, save matches, f-ck a duck and see what hatches!"

I just watched the 23-minute audition footage FOX released from season 10 of American Idol, and that little partially bleeped quip -- delivered by new judge Steven Tyler after a Hollywood hopeful knocked 'em dead in the audition room -- is only part of why this season of Idol could be a lot better than we had anticipated.
