MB1_1595.JPGUPDATE: Happy April Fools' Day! (Of course)

With the competition's recent loss of its youngest contestant, American Idol has come up with a new way to appeal to a younger demographic.

"Season 10 is all about changes, and we've come up with a revolutionary new theme for this week that we're very excited about," producer Nigel Lythgoe says. Next week, for the first time ever, Idol contestants will sing hits and memes from the internet.

"Some of the songs have actually become quite popular," Lythgoe continued, "when it came time to choose their songs, the contestants fought over Rebecca Black's 'Friday,' but in the end, Pia [Toscano] prevailed in a game of rock, paper, scissors, and I think she and Jimmy Iovine will make magic with the song." Having struggled with song choice in the past, "Friday" isn't the only song choice you may recognize.

For those of you who have gotten to know me though my recaps, brace yourselves. I liked tonight’s episode of “American Idol.” A lot. And not because Paul McDonald survives another week. But because it was genuinely a good episode (except for will.i.am Am’s horrible auto-tuning).

The only thing that could’ve made it better would’ve been Jacob Lusk going home puppies tap dancing.

I was a huge format of tonight’s results. I loved the duets and smaller group performances. I’ve always disliked the sound of 5 or more people singing together, so that’s one of the reasons I was always so hard on the group numbers on results tonight. I hope they keep doing it this way.

On to the recap (this is a chronological recap).

Right away, Ryan Seacrest tells us they’re shaking things up. “Oh wonderful,” I thought. Then he tells us Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery are going to duet. That’s great news. I’ve secretly wanted them to make it to the Top 4 to hear them duet and now I don’t have to wait that long.

Scotty and Lauren perform an amazing version of “I Told You So.” Lauren’s really growing on me. Her performance tonight was another A+ one (if I were grading). And Scotty was smooth and nice as always. And we didn’t have to see Scotty try to dance. Avoiding awkward is always nice.

After the song, Ryan pulls them to center stage and tells them they’re safe.

The Ford video follows the break and even that was entertaining. Seeing the Idols as superheroes was fun. The song sucked (remember I hated groups of people singing together), but who cares, right?

Naima Adedapo and Jacob Lusk are called up to sing a duet together. And that’s all I’m going to say about that .

Following their performance of “Solid,” Ryan tells Jacob he’s safe and that Naima is in the Bottom 3.

Fantasia gives an enjoyable performance then we get a so-so version of “Teenage Dream” from Haley Reinhart, Thia Megia and Pia Toscano. But I don’t blame the girls. That’s pretty much a non-song anyway. Katy Perry isn’t exactly a powerhouse singer and that was written for her, so I let Thia, Pia and Haley off the hook.

After their number, Ryan tells them Thia is in the bottom and the other two are safe. So far I’m 2 for 2 in my Bottom 3 predictions from last night.

I knew it was too good to be true. Just when I thought I was going to like the entire episode, they give us a bunch of filler including yet another repeat of Casey’s overly-dramatic save last week. Zzzzzzzzz.

Next up is Paul McDonald, James Durbin, Casey Abrams and Stefano Langone. Their foursome performs “Band on the Run” and again, I had fun. I really like this format. Have I mentioned that?

After they’re done, Ryan informs them they’re all safe except for Paul. That makes my Bottom 3 predictions 3 for 3.
After will.i.am and Jamie Foxx’s garbage auto-tune performance, it’s time to get down to the task at hand.

Paul is sent to safety and that means Thia and Naima are going home. I’ve never been more happy to get my who is going home prediction wrong.

Tonight on American Idol, we’ll learn which two singers will be sent home as part of this week’s exciting double elimination episode. Nigel Lythgoe announced earlier that there were over 55 million votes cast which is a new season record for so many votes this early on in the competition.

Based on your votes in our Top 11 Round 2 performance poll I’m seeing the trailing contenders for tonight’s elimination are Naima and Paul, both tied at 2%, with Stefano not far behind at 3%. My prediction? Naima has amazing staying power, so she might survive again. This could be the end for Paul and Stefano.

MB1_0482.JPGSome of the American Idol contestants are really starting to come into their own, and the viewers are choosing their favorites. I do think we're still at the point where a good performance can save or destroy a person despite their fan base, though. This week, the contestants sang Elton John songs, and a lot of them had very long titles. Then I ranked them, placing Scotty McCreery in the #1 spot because I just felt like it and it's my opinion and this is America and because of that you don't have to agree with me ever if you don't want to.

Finally, I made predictions about who might be going home, but really I have no idea because I've been so wrong so many times already. I did figure out that Paul McDonald sounds like a cross between James Blunt and Adam Sandler singing "Lunch Lady Land," though. It was a small victory. I hope you didn't miss the performances this week, because Haley was actually pretty good and James Durbin lit a piano on fire. I said that like anyone only watches the results shows and not the performances. If that applies to you, you're doing it wrong!
