Haley is out. Scotty and Lauren are in. The only thing left to do is crown Scotty let the two compete next Tuesday and then viewers will get to vote for which country-themed teenager they want to be the next American Idol.
Shortly after last night’s elimination show a small event was held to determine who would go first and who would clean up. Throughout the season production makes this decision but when it came down to just two singers left the show left it to fate gravity.
THR reports Ryan Seacrest flipped a coin featuring the Top 2′s faces, one on each side. Scotty came up the winner, but…
…the singer decided to defer to his competitor: In a gentlemanly manner, he asked her if she preferred to go first or second. She chose second.
The move is a generous one: The person who performs last is typically thought to have an advantage.
When there are twelve singers I can see a big advantage to going last, but with just two it might not be nearly as critical. Still a kind gesture from Scotty which I’m sure will earn him plenty of “aww”s on Tuesday night.
On a plus note for the show’s longevity, American Idol 2011 was up 12% last night from its respective show last season. Next week should be a big one!

With FOX’s Upfronts this week there were a few tidbits for the American Idol 2012 season. First off we know when the show will return (January 22, 2012) along with its weekly schedule (Wednesdays and Thursdays, post-auditions). Now we also have word on who will be sitting behind the Judges’ table.
Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson both signed multi-year contracts ahead of the 2011 season so that should guarantee they’re back (contracts in Hollywood don’t seem to mean the same thing as contracts in the rest of the country, so it seems). Jennifer Lopez, however, did not sign a multi-year contract and instead went with a single season that had the option for renewal. So far it seems that renewal has not been confirmed and no details on if either side is leaning away.
Lopez recently said in an interview that she hasn’t made up her mind about another season:
“I don’t know if I will do another season [of American Idol]. I’m taking it day by day at the moment and we’ll see what happens,” [Lopez] said.
I was suspicious of Lopez’s return next season when she announced her Latin talent search show “The Chosen” along with her sudden renewal of music presence. Remember her album floundered after Sony/Epic dropped her but was finally completed and released after she joined the American Idol machine. Now Lopez has the chance to go on tour, get in the studio, and explore what every other musical interests she may have. Will she have time to do all that and be a judge on American Idol 2012? As soon as we know, we’ll make sure you know.
Two questions: Would Idol 2012 be better or worse without JLo? If Jennifer Lopez does not return for next season then who would you like to see in her seat?

We haven’t even hit the finale yet this season, but FOX has already set its plans for American Idol 2012 with a premiere date and the series schedule.
The 11th season will premiere on Sunday, January 22nd at 10PM ET (7PM PT) right after the NFC Championship game. FOX will be putting a strong lead in to use that night rather than the usual mid-week debut.
Once we get through the start up weeks of audition episodes American Idol will return to its comfy seat with Wednesday night performances at 8PM and Thursday results shows at 8PM. Glad to see they’re holding on to these same nights after the trial run this season instead of going back to Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Are you ready for the new American Idol 2012 season already?
Side note: FOX was working it at their Upfronts yesterday and brought together their Idol voices with SYTYCD dancers. Just a few more days until SYTYCD Season 8.

The hometown tours for the American Idol Top 3 were a big hit as Scotty, Lauren, and Haley each headed back home for a hero’s welcome and treated their fans to a few great performances. We’ll see lots more of this on Wednesday’s performance show, but here’s some local coverage for each of the singers.
Scotty’s trip took him home to Garner, NC were it looks like he was ready to impress the crowds with his trademarked smile. NewsObserver has a lengthy rundown on all of Scotty’s events. Scotty even had the chance to sing alongside Josh Turner which was a bit of a surprise for all, especially Scotty. It’s hilarious.

Lauren headed back to Chattanooga, TN and went everywhere from throwing out the first pitch at a ballgame to delivering a few songs at a nearby park. Rome News Tribune has a few video clips if you want to hear her sing to her fans.

Haley looked mighty comfortable in her hometown of Chicago, IL on Saturday when she went back to her old job, high school, and even did a few songs for her Chicago fans as well. Daily Herald has a full set of pics from the day’s events.

Did anyone out there make it to these events? If you could have picked one to visit, which singer would you have wanted to see perform this weekend?
