Remember American Idol 2011′s most shocking elimination? Well, it’s time to find out if fans were right to over react to Pia Toscano’s Idol departure because her first single, “This Time,” has had a couple days to circulate (listen to the new single below).

I’ve listened to it and while Pia was one of my favorites during the season, I don’t care much for the single. I was actually pretty surprised it was an empowerment anthem and not a ballad.

But Pia explains the song better than I could.

“The song could pertain to ‘American Idol’ and my journey on the show,” Toscano told MTV News. “It’s a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, and it’s not just a breakup song.”

We knew Pia Toscano was going to act fast once she was eliminated from the 2011 season of American Idol back in March, but we just weren’t sure how soon it’d be. E! News says that time is now and it won’t be long until we hear singles from her:

Sources tell E! News that former American Idol contestant Pia Toscano will start recording her debut album as early as next week. “She’s set to start on Monday and we’ll see what works for her,” an insider tells us.

We’re hearing that Pia’s first duty will be to start recording possible singles to release after the Idol season ends.

Artists she will most likely work with under 19 Management include Idol producers Rodney Jerkins and Rock Mafia (Tim James and Antonina Armato).

Honestly, I’m kind of surprised it’ll be that late after all the brouhaha over whether or not she’d even be allowed to release before the season of American Idol was over. Probably still time for Pia to release before the winner gets a chance.

So the question remains: is there enough interest in a Pia Toscano album or have the flames gone out since she was cut?

And while we’re on the topic of Pia Toscano, let me say, no, I do not believe the rumor that she’s going to be paid $100,000 to perform one night at a private event. Are you kidding me? I’m not even going to link to the “story” because they cite zero references other than “our sources” and it sounds completely bogus.

I can make stuff up too. Try this: Pia Toscano is going to perform a private concert at my home and pay me one million dollars to do it. Woah! See how easy that was?

American Idol might have given her the boot, but ABC’s Dancing with the Stars gave her a stage. Pia Toscano, eliminated during Top 9 Week of American Idol 2011, became the first crossover star of the season to perform on another show, much less on another network!

Last night on DWTS, Pia performed a fast-paced, high energy song… hah! I’m kidding it was another ballad, but if you were a fan of Toscano’s then you’ll definitely enjoy it. Rumored boyfriend, Mark Ballas, even does some dancing to accompany the performance of “I’ll Stand By You.” Watch Pia’s DWTS debut:

So was this a coordinated strike by both FOX and ABC to starve out NBC’s The Voice last night? It’s certainly possible, but it didn’t keep me from watching the new series premiere. What about you?

A few weeks ago word broke that Jimmy Iovine was pushing to get an album made with Pia Toscano before the American Idol 2011 season was over. While it makes sense to strike while the iron is hot, the American Idol producers said at the time that they weren’t going to allow an eliminated Idol Hopeful to steal the eventual winner’s thunder. Someone is singing a different tune today.

American Idol Executive Producer Ken Warwick told reporters today, “If we’ve got a rising star that the record companies and ['Idol' parent company] CKX think are marketable now, they will try to get records out.

As time’s gone on, we realized what we’re seeing so often is that the big star is not the winner, but from the top five or top 10, so it’s unfair to hold someone back so we can promote someone else.”

I’m not sure I’d agree that it’s unfair that the season winner gets the first album. He or she (probably “he” this season) made it to the end and won the game. That seems like a very fair prize. But when it comes to Hollywood, green calls the shots.

So does this mean we’ll definitely see a Pia Toscano album or at least a single before late May? That’s not much time, but I think it’s entirely possible.
