After more than 95 million votes, America chose country teenagers Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina as its 2011 “American Idol” Top 2.

While I think it’s going to be a somewhat boring competition show next Tuesday, I don’t think it’s a bad Top 2. I was rooting for Haley Reinhart to make it to the finale with Scotty, but only because I enjoy her performances more. Overall, I’m good because I was on the team that believed any of the Top 4 would’ve made for a great finale.

At the beginning of the night we were treated to immediate filler of the Top 4 visiting J.J. Abrams the previous week and they couldn’t have been less excited. That was followed by what I think might have been a seizure from Elle Fanning.

The first real order of business was footage from Haley’s homecoming. It was nice to see a softer side of Haley. She’s been pretty tough all season, so it was good to see that human side. Had she shown that side of her earlier in the game, she might have made the Final 2.

After that and a Ford video, we were “treated” to a performance by Il Volo for some reason I still don’t understand. Nothing like baby faced boys who sound like 50-year-old Opera singers.

Next up is Scotty’s trip home. Scotty seemed truly modest, as if he had no idea he’d have that many fans. And like Haley, he was very emotional.

More crap filler follows in the form of a pre-recorded performance by the new “X Factor” host and it’s passed off  as a live performance. Why do they always want us to think these performances are happening live? It’s so insulting.

Lauren’s home visit seemed to be the most grand. When I saw the incredibly HUGE crowd that turned out for her, I knew right then she was in the finale. And from that footage, I think she could even beat Scotty next week. Maybe.

Finally, it’s time for the results. Ryan calls the three of them up and first announces that Scotty is going to the finale. Then he tells Lauren to join him. Haley seems shocked and maybe angry, but quickly covers and comes off very respectable with her reactions.

Haley sings one last time (well, until next week) and does her awesome version of “Bennie And The Jets.”

So it’s Scotty and Lauren. It’s been a long season with a lot of curve balls, but it’s almost over. I’m either going to be ready for a break or miss this ridiculous show like crazy. I’m not sure which yet.

What are your thoughts on the Top 2?

It was no surprise that Jacob Lusk was sent packing on “American Idol” Thursday night. I’ve been ready for him to go ever since he told me I don’t like what I see when I look in the mirror. Not that I know what that even means, but I took it as an insult. Anyway, he’s gone and we have a Top 4: Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery, Haley Reinhart and James Durbin. I have to say, I’m quite pleased with this season’s Top 4.

Pardon me while I sound like a broken record, but can someone tell me why oh why the Thursday results shows are an hour long? While this week’s episode wasn’t as painful as last week’s, it was still filled with too much filler and Fox pimping.

The opening number “Happy Together” sounded decent, but it was so long. The Hell’s Kitchen filler was pretty entertaining, but the Ford video was a snore. Lady Antebellum took the stage as “Idol” further embraces the country genre this season. Then there’s more filler.

Finally, Ryan starts with the results. James is up first and is sent to the far side of the stage. I knew immediately that he was going to do that two groups of two thing with the last person being safe and then asked to join the group they think is safe, which they never actually do. Pardon that run-on but there was no other way to express that thought.

Lauren is up next and she is sent to the opposite side of the stage. It was pretty obvious to me that she was going to be in the bottom, because there’s no way I thought James would be. America loved his tears Wednesday night.

Time for another performance. This time it’s Jennifer Lopez performing “On The Floor.” And it’s CLEARLY pre-recorded but they tried very hard to make us think it wasn’t. Even going as far as pretending Jennifer was off changing clothes after her performance. It sometimes make me wonder if they fake this, what else do they fake…

More results. Jacob is told to join Lauren. Even more obvious that’s the Bottom 2. Haley is sent to join James. Finally, Ryan tells Scotty he’s safe and tells him to join the group that is safe.  Like every season, he refuses, so Ryan pulls him over to James and Haley’s group and tells them they’re all safe.

Ryan also points out (like I did last week) that Scotty was NOT in the Bottom 2 last week with Casey, meaning he’s never been in the bottom.

So it’s Lauren and Jacob in the Bottom 2 and Lauren is already crying. That girl needs to get a hold of her emotions and fears or she’s going home next week.

Jacob is eliminated and gets to sing one last time. For the first time this season, I enjoyed his performance. He actually seemed to have some personality at the end. Good for him.

I almost thought it was Lauren who was going home since Ryan earlier said the results might surprise us. I guess the surprise was that she was in the bottom instead of Haley. Speaking of Haley, she has really turned her position in this contest around. She very well might make the Top 3 and possibly the finale. That is unless Lauren’s fans were scared by her spot in the Bottom 2 and step up their voting next week.

Another question that comes up is where will Jacob’s votes go? Not to Scotty. Not to James. I guess they’d most likely go to Lauren. But even that seems weird. Next week is going to be very interesting. The ONLY thing that I’m 98 percent sure of is that Scotty will be fine next week and the week after, thus putting himself in the finale. But who is going to join him? James? Or is that too obvious. Lauren? Will her fans vote harder now? Or Haley? Has she finally convinced America to vote for her? This is so uncertain it’s actually kind of exciting.

What are your thoughts, hopes and predictions?

For weeks on “American Idol,” Stefano Langone has been toying with America. From being eliminated to becoming a wild card pick, he held on week after week, despite landing in the Bottom 3 most of the time. Thursday it finally came to an end as he was sent packing.

I was almost certain he’d continue his streak at least one more week and send Jacob Lusk home (OK, maybe I was just hoping really hard). Jacob’s elimination wasn’t all I was wrong about. I was also pretty certain Haley Reinhart would escape the bottom, pushing Lauren Alaina there. But that wasn’t the case. It does seem Haley was barely in the bottom though since Ryan Seacrest immediately relieved her of her Bottom 3 duties.

At the beginning of the night, we got a pretty rough performance from Lauren, Haley, Stefano and Jacob when they took on Train’s “Soul Sister.” But that was by far better than Casey Abrams, James Durbin and Scotty McCreery’s Coldplay cover. It was horrible. You know it’s bad when out of those three, Scotty sounded the best (you  know, since he never sings anything other than country).

I just want to know why the make Casey and Scotty  dance. They can’t do it. It’s always a hilarious spectacle.

Next we get the first round of results. Ryan asks Casey and Jacob to stand up. He gives the rundown from the night before and tells Casey he is safe. And to no one’s surprise, Jacob is the first planted in the Bottom 3.

David Cook then returns to the “Idol” stage and doesn’t sound very good either. I’m really starting to think the new person in charge of sound just really blows. Because David never sounded bad on that stage before tonight. Weird.

Then we get more pointless filler. Who cares that they went bowling or went to a spa. They’re mostly teenagers. They don’t need that luxury.

Finally, more results. Ryan brings Lauren, James and Stefano to center stage. He first sends Stefano to the Bottom 3, again no surprise there. James and Lauren are sent to safety.

Then it’s between Haley and Scotty. Gee, I wonder who is in the bottom between these two? It was a surprise for Haley to be back in the bottom after her performance on Wednesday night, but when it’s just between her and Scotty, there’s absolutely no surprise. So Scotty is safe and she’s not. Oh, and we find out Haley has no idea what the word “niche” means.

After a completely canned performance of Katy Perry dressed as Lady Gaga an alien that Ryan pretends is live, we get to the final results. Jacob or Stefano? We already know what happens (and what should have happened), so I’ll spare the repeat. Jacob, pack your bags next week!

What were your thoughts on the outcome and Thursday’s episode in general? Who do you want to see go next? Who do you want to win this thing? And how boring will next week be when the theme is songs of Carole King?

For the first time since the Top 13, a guy was sent home on “American Idol.” And unfortunately it was Paul McDonald, the only contestant with real charisma and a comforting stage presence. And for the record, I think James Durbin has good stage presence too, but it’s just a bit intense. Paul might not have been the absolute best singer, but his star power is undeniable. But the voters have spoken and lucky for Scotty McCreery, teen girls aren’t too into older guys (or females as we’ve learned the past six weeks).

The show opened with a duet between Lauren Alaina and Scotty, meaning they’re once again doing the duets and small group numbers instead of the painful large group number. I like the smaller groups so much better. Lauren and Scotty again sounded great together. I’m surprised they paired them together again though since “American Idol” does very little that makes sense.

Speaking of doing things that don’t make sense, they show us a detailed behind-the-scenes look at the Ford music video BEFORE they air the video, thus spoiling the zombie makeup surprise. Seriously, why does American Idol do things like that? Makes no sense.

Next up is a duet with Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart. Another good pairing. And that coming from me means a lot because I’m so not a Casey fan. But it really worked. I mean it was sort of loung-singerish, but still entertaining. Good job, “Idol.”

So that gives us Casey, Haley, Lauren and Scotty together for the first round of results. Scotty is sent to safety first, of course. Then Lauren. Then Ryan tells Haley she’s back in the bottom 3 and that Casey is safe. Thanks once again judges for throwing someone under the bus who really didn’t deserve it. But anyway…

Next we get more dumb filler and a good performance from Kelly Clarkson and some guy in a cowboy hat (I got distracted because I don’t watch this show for filler, sorry).

Paul, James, Jacob Lusk and Stefano Langone are paired up to take on a medley from “The Graduate.” It was a pretty good performance. “The Sound of Silence” sounded awesome and it was nice to hear Paul sing “Mrs. Robinson” since that was the song I picked for him in my Tuesday blog. I’m surprised they got Jacob to sing “Mrs. Robinson” though. I thought he’d want no part in a song that hints at adultery with an older woman.

So out of the four of them, James is first sent to safety. Then Stefano is put into the Bottom 3. Then Paul joins him. Jacob is safe.

After Rihanna’s performance, we get the not-so-surprising news that Haley and Stefano are safe and Paul is going home. I felt last night that this would be the outcome. I’ll miss Paul and the fun he brought to the stage.

What were your thoughts on Thursday’s Idol show and results?

For those of you who have gotten to know me though my recaps, brace yourselves. I liked tonight’s episode of “American Idol.” A lot. And not because Paul McDonald survives another week. But because it was genuinely a good episode (except for will.i.am Am’s horrible auto-tuning).

The only thing that could’ve made it better would’ve been Jacob Lusk going home puppies tap dancing.

I was a huge format of tonight’s results. I loved the duets and smaller group performances. I’ve always disliked the sound of 5 or more people singing together, so that’s one of the reasons I was always so hard on the group numbers on results tonight. I hope they keep doing it this way.

On to the recap (this is a chronological recap).

Right away, Ryan Seacrest tells us they’re shaking things up. “Oh wonderful,” I thought. Then he tells us Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery are going to duet. That’s great news. I’ve secretly wanted them to make it to the Top 4 to hear them duet and now I don’t have to wait that long.

Scotty and Lauren perform an amazing version of “I Told You So.” Lauren’s really growing on me. Her performance tonight was another A+ one (if I were grading). And Scotty was smooth and nice as always. And we didn’t have to see Scotty try to dance. Avoiding awkward is always nice.

After the song, Ryan pulls them to center stage and tells them they’re safe.

The Ford video follows the break and even that was entertaining. Seeing the Idols as superheroes was fun. The song sucked (remember I hated groups of people singing together), but who cares, right?

Naima Adedapo and Jacob Lusk are called up to sing a duet together. And that’s all I’m going to say about that .

Following their performance of “Solid,” Ryan tells Jacob he’s safe and that Naima is in the Bottom 3.

Fantasia gives an enjoyable performance then we get a so-so version of “Teenage Dream” from Haley Reinhart, Thia Megia and Pia Toscano. But I don’t blame the girls. That’s pretty much a non-song anyway. Katy Perry isn’t exactly a powerhouse singer and that was written for her, so I let Thia, Pia and Haley off the hook.

After their number, Ryan tells them Thia is in the bottom and the other two are safe. So far I’m 2 for 2 in my Bottom 3 predictions from last night.

I knew it was too good to be true. Just when I thought I was going to like the entire episode, they give us a bunch of filler including yet another repeat of Casey’s overly-dramatic save last week. Zzzzzzzzz.

Next up is Paul McDonald, James Durbin, Casey Abrams and Stefano Langone. Their foursome performs “Band on the Run” and again, I had fun. I really like this format. Have I mentioned that?

After they’re done, Ryan informs them they’re all safe except for Paul. That makes my Bottom 3 predictions 3 for 3.
After will.i.am and Jamie Foxx’s garbage auto-tune performance, it’s time to get down to the task at hand.

Paul is sent to safety and that means Thia and Naima are going home. I’ve never been more happy to get my who is going home prediction wrong.
