Has Jennifer Lopez signed a contract to return for American Idol 2012? Insiders are saying that’s the case and it was done with a massive raise from last year’s $12 million paycheck, according to The Wrap:
The pop star will be returning to the singing competition with a contract with the Fox Broadcasting Network that’s “a smidge over” $20 million, according to one of the [sources].
Both insiders said the deal is complete but has not yet been signed.
Another insider close to the show denied that a deal was in place.
Others disagreed. The $20 million was apparently the base minimum for Lopez, and after tough negotations with Fox, ended up just above that number.
Was Jennifer Lopez such an irreplaceable component of last season’s American Idol that she was worth $20 million this time around? I guess if Idol was previously paying Simon Cowell over $50 million then they’ve got that kind of money to throw around. Apparently someone was much more impressed than I was.
Hopefully this becomes official news soon so we can get on to more interesting news like the American Idol 2012 auditions taking place this summer and the follow-up callback events. The new season is almost here!

Jennifer Lopez, whose return to American Idol 2012 has been in question, announced her divorce from Marc Anthony this past Friday. While I have no interest in digging in to the reason for the couple’s split, I can’t help but wonder about the impact on JLo’s still unannounced decision on whether or not to return to American Idol next season.
Late last season we learned that Lopez would be teaming up with her husband and reality royalty, Mark Burnett, to create a Latin music reality series called “The Chosen.” Couple that with Lopez’s return to the musical spotlight, which means touring, and it was quickly looking like we had seen the last of Jennifer and her goosebumps behind the judges’ table.
If Lopez and Marc Anthony are calling it quits then would she really want to tour Latin America with him to find new musical superstars? Or would she prefer to come back to the comfort of that middle chair, collect her $12+ million paycheck, and not shake her rump at next season’s finale for her soon to be ex?
I’m guessing it’s the latter. What do you think? Could this news make it more or less likely that Jennifer Lopez returns for American Idol 2012?

Tonight’s final American Idol 2011 performance show will feature three songs for each of the remaining singers and we’ve got some early details on what a few of those will be. Shockingly, these Idol spoilers didn’t come from Haley Reinhart’s parents this time. Instead, Taste of Country broke the story revealing the “if they won, what would they release” song selections.
Taste of Country was tipped by a source at Universal Music Group, who tells us that McCreery’s song is called ‘Love You This Big’ and Alaina’s is titled ‘Like My Mother Does.’
Both singers will premiere their new singles during this week’s ‘Idol’ performance show on Tuesday, May 24.
I’m not sure what makes these songs the artist would first release if they won because both of them will be releasing the songs before either one wins. So…
USA Today is also reporting the remaining Country duo will get some big star power for helping to pick out one of their other two songs. Carrie Underwood will choose for Lauren while George Straight will have the honors for Scotty’s selection. I have to assume these song selections will take the place of Simon Fuller’s picks as previously reported by Idol or else we’ll have four total songs for each.
Still no word on the third performance which will be the singer’s favorite from earlier in the season, but would anyone be surprised by Scotty going back to his ol’ faithful Josh Turner cover and Lauren doing her Miley fav? But that’s exactly why I don’t think either of them will do those tonight on American Idol.

Reports from The New York Post, yes yes I know, indicate Ryan Seacrest is in talks with NBC to start a new show. A new singing show. Oh but it gets better. That new music show will focus not on contestant competitiveness, but rather on artist competitiveness. Gee, if only NBC already had a show that could do that for them…
Seacrest and his production company are working on “another music concept, which is a totally different kind of competition show,” Paul Telegdy, the network’s head of alternative programming, tells The Post.
“It is self-contained episodes. It is a bit more fun. It’s not contestant competitive. It’s artist competitive.”
The show is in the very early stages of development — too early to say if the mini-mogul would continue to host “Idol” or move to NBC to host the new program, officials say.
Damn. They even worked a subtle short joke in there (“mini-mogul”). So the story goes that maybe Ryan will leave Idol to focus on his new show or maybe he’ll stay and do both. How about Door #3 where FOX tells Seacrest to pound sand if he thinks they’ll let me do both and use Idol to pimp his show on a different network.
Keep in mind that Ryan Seacrest recently re-upped his American Idol 2011 contract for $15 million a year. That’s a lot of money to risk walking away from. Couple that with the fact that he’s got the biggest television stage in the world right now makes me think this is going nowhere fast.
NBC, maybe you should focus on your existing new singing show before rushing off to start a new one. Step one could be to stop doing things like moving that new show to a 10PM start time. Sheesh.
Would American Idol still be the same for you if Ryan left?

We knew Pia Toscano was going to act fast once she was eliminated from the 2011 season of American Idol back in March, but we just weren’t sure how soon it’d be. E! News says that time is now and it won’t be long until we hear singles from her:
Sources tell E! News that former American Idol contestant Pia Toscano will start recording her debut album as early as next week. “She’s set to start on Monday and we’ll see what works for her,” an insider tells us.
We’re hearing that Pia’s first duty will be to start recording possible singles to release after the Idol season ends.
Artists she will most likely work with under 19 Management include Idol producers Rodney Jerkins and Rock Mafia (Tim James and Antonina Armato).
Honestly, I’m kind of surprised it’ll be that late after all the brouhaha over whether or not she’d even be allowed to release before the season of American Idol was over. Probably still time for Pia to release before the winner gets a chance.
So the question remains: is there enough interest in a Pia Toscano album or have the flames gone out since she was cut?
And while we’re on the topic of Pia Toscano, let me say, no, I do not believe the rumor that she’s going to be paid $100,000 to perform one night at a private event. Are you kidding me? I’m not even going to link to the “story” because they cite zero references other than “our sources” and it sounds completely bogus.
I can make stuff up too. Try this: Pia Toscano is going to perform a private concert at my home and pay me one million dollars to do it. Woah! See how easy that was?
