Scotty McCreery is our 2011 American Idol.

My prediction was wrong and I’m actually happy about that. Are you? In case you don’t know, last night, after Lauren Alaina’s sappy song about moms, I said she’d take the crown tonight. I also said I’d prefer Scotty to win, so I’m happy to be wrong.

Scotty’s emotional win came at the end of 2 hours and 7 minutes of OK-performances, almost no surprise musical guests, and a massive pimping of artists’ new albums, tours and even “Kung Fu Panda 2.” In other words, aside from Scotty’s win and Steven Tyler’s performance, it was pretty much the worst finale ever.

Why did they tell us who the musical guests were going to be before the performances? That’s always been my favorite part… where they start a medley and you’re like “ooooh is the artist they’re singing really going to show up or not!???!” Then one of the Idols says “Ladies and gentlemen …” They always show up but I still like the element of wonder and surprise. So I was VERY disappointed by the lack of that.

I was also very disappointed by the performances of Gaga, Beyonce and “Spider-Man” the musical. I wanted to see MORE Top 13 performances mixed in with guests. I wanted Paul McDonald to duet with Rod Stewart. I wanted Pia Toscano to duet with Celine Dion. I wanted more of the “Idol” finale format I love.

The best performances were Steven Tyler’s “Dream On,” Scotty’s duet with Tim McGraw, the girls doing the Beyonce medley and the Lauren and Carrie Underwood duet. But wow, did Lauren seem like a karaoke star singing next to Carrie Underwood.

The worst performances of the night were the guys’ Tom Jones’ medley (even though I did finally get to hear Stefano Langone sing Prince via Tom Jones) and Casey Abrams and Jack Black’s murder of Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls.”

We also got the typical montage where we make fun of all the people who didn’t make it on the show. And this year, we got a montage of each of the judges. Randy Jackson’s just featured his arrogance and Jennifer’s showcased her diva ways. Steven’s was all about his dirty mouth and lust for the ladies. In other words, it was hilarious.

It’s been a season of ups and downs. It started out huge and slowly became the same “American Idol” from every other year. And that’s OK with me because we love it, right? It was also a season of shocks. Casey was cut then saved. Pia’s elimination dropped jaws. James Durbin fell victim to the Chirs Daughtry Top 4 rocker curse. Haley went from bottom to top. The season definitely had its moments.

So congratulations, Scotty. And thank you to all my readers. It’s been a fun season and thanks for sharing it with me. Are we all looking forward to a summer of Idol judge speculations (will they stay or will they go?) and unfulfilled promises from Nigel? I am! Maybe we’ll even hear “I Love You This Big” on the radio! Eh. Probably not.

Goodnight!

Well that “American Idol” finale performance show was about as fun as I thought it was going to be. And by that, I mean not very. I knew two country teens going head to head wasn’t going to have me dancing on my couch, but I expected a little more than what we got. Pretty boring, folks. In my opinion anyway. Oh well, tomorrow night will be way more exciting.

At least we barely heard from the judges. That was very refreshing.

As always, I’ll review each performance and assign the letter grade I think each one deserves.

ROUND ONE: Contestants’ favorite song of the season

*Scotty McCreery, “Gone.” Scotty made the perfect pick in this round. His version of“Gone” was even in our Top 10 list earlier today. It sounded just as good as the first time he did it. Fun, energetic, and very Scotty. He seemed a bit more disconnected tonight than usual, but I’ll chalk that up to stress. A

*Lauren Alaina, “Flat On The Floor.” This was not her best song of the season, but I understand she’s trying to match Scotty as far as song style. Like the first time she did it, it was fine. Vocally it was fine. Stage presence was fine. So if there’s a problem, it’s the fact that it was all just fine, and not great. Or exciting. Or new. Like Scotty, Lauren also just seemed disconnected or out of sorts all night. B+

Round One goes to Scotty.

ROUND TWO: Contestants’ idols choose the song

*Scotty, “Check Yes Or No.” George Strait picked his own song for Scotty. That’s kind of arrogant, isn’t it? Scotty did a fine job with it. There was no challenge there since he’s singing probably one of his favorite songs. Overall, it was a tiny bit boring, but sounded good. B

*Lauren, “Maybe It Was Memphis.” Carrie Underwood picked this one for Lauren. And while it was a better song choice than Scotty’s Lauren didn’t do much to make her own. It was just kind of there. And I see why Lauren blew her voice out earlier because she’s overdoing it in places trying to get an edge on Scotty. I try to avoid cutting on appearance, but what was with that “Toddlers & Tiaras” pageant dress made for a 5-year-old? Lauren’s biggest issue has been immaturity and that dress sure didn’t help. B

Round Two is a tie (for most boring).

ROUND THREE: The song they’ll record if they win

*Scotty, “I Love You This Big.” This wasn’t actually a pretty good song. Especially for a finale. I guess it pays to have Jimmy Iovine involved with the show. I think the song has a good hook and would definitely be one we could hear on the radio, unlike most of the winners’ first singles. And Scotty owned it. A

*Lauren, “Like My Mother Does.” Forget what I said about Scotty’s song being good for a finale song. This is the song. And it’s the one that will be released because Lauren is winning tomorrow night. After this song, I think it’s pretty safe to say it’s nailed down. And it has little to do with how she sang it (which she did very well, by the way).  A+

Round Three goes to Lauren.

So how do I think it will play out tomorrow night? Like I just said, Lauren will be the next “American Idol.” If for no other reason, than for the “Mother” song. It’s a song about Moms. Everyone loves their mom. Mom’s love songs about them. They’re all calling in and voting for Lauren right now as I type this. It’s clearly the show giving Lauren the edge and finally getting that female winner again.

I find it a bit unfair. It was more fair back when the Top 2 had to sing and record the same song.  It’s all unfortunate because I think Scotty is a little more ready for this than Lauren. I don’t dislike Lauren, but of the two, I think I prefer Scotty slightly more. And maybe I’ll be wrong tomorrow night (I have been a lot of times this season), but I doubt it.

i enjoyed it allot but i have to say my best artist performance was when the Bee Gees sang how deep is your love. I dint really like any of the other celebrirt singers, but 4 me the best part of the show and i am sure for allot of other people was when Paula Abdul came on stage (aka also know as sexy in pink for the final lol). It was really so nice to have her back , she look so sexy in her pink dress , i think she wore that sexy pink dress for Simon cause we all know how much she liked Simon and she said simon was a flirt , when they play Simon’s videos from previous American idol shows , they showed onE video where Simon tells Paula you are wearing a very short dress also he said Paula’s a very good kisser. You could tell tat PAula likes simon allot but it was just a friendly relationship , Paula has allot of love in her not only 4 Simon but 4 her fans as well and when she can on American idol the crowd went wild 4 her she is the best. And o top it all Lee DyWyzw won American idol. Paula we all love u and word has it she might be back as the new judge on American idol season 10 , i hope she comes back. What was your favorite moment / part / performance on the finale and why? and who knew Paula Abdul genually liked Simon so much until we saw it on the finale, i guess Simon has his way with the girl’s , i mean not with money i mean with his charm and i am starting to think Kara Diagwardi also likes Simon to. Simon will be missed but allot of guys and girls and no one can replace him or have his personality on the show.
